Pulmonary Rehabilitation is a medically supervised, physician prescribed, education and exercise program for people with lung disease.
The program is directed by a pulmonologist and staffed by exercise specialists, physical therapists, registered nurses, and respiratory therapists. Each participant receives an individual treatment plan designed according to their needs and health status.
The program includes exercise sessions two times each week, and group education sessions one time each week. The class size varies from four to eight participants. The program duration is approximately eight weeks, but may vary according to the patient’s progress.
Eligible participants include but are not limited to those who have been diagnosed with emphysema, asthma, COPD, chronic bronchitis, occupational/environmental lung disease, sarcoidosis, and pre/post lung surgery. A physician referral is required prior to beginning the program.
Upon completion of the eight week Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program, participants may enter the Pulmonary Rehabilitation Maintenance Program. Classes are held two times a week in a supervised, but less intensely monitored environment. The program is designed to promote long term compliance to exercise, and provide group support in a comfortable atmosphere.
